The universe is kept in balance by the forces of push and pull, opposites in a miraculous chaotic dance. A star cannot shine and remain stable without gravity and this is what I have found in my wife, Alice, of over 10 years. She is the gravity in my life, providing the grounding and stability that allows me to shine so brilliantly, yet not burn out in an industry that is known to move at the speed of thought. Alice reminds me and shares with me the important things in life. From this harmony, Alice and I are gifted with a daughter, Magnolia, who is a perfect reflection of all that is good between us.
I came from a relatively large family by today’s standards, and being the first born son in a Vietnamese family of five children, I was ‘given reign to command the fold’ but as the saying goes, “power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” However, at the age of 12, I discovered that there were other ways to win favor, cooperation, and desired results. This included leadership by example, leveraged alliance, influence through meritocracy, friendship, mentoring, and negotiation. I was rewarded with great relationships with my siblings and invaluable skills to collaborate, lead teams, and manage projects.
I am a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with majors in Biology and Computer Science. I once dreamed of helping sick people until I realized that my sympathy for people’s suffering impaired my ability to help them. I pursued instead my interest in higher level mathematics and computers, which first started in my youth dabbling with the Atari 800. My parents have long since forgiven me for giving up a medical career for the software industry.
Indeed, it has and continues to be a good decision, having been involved with a multitude of projects across numerous industries such as: Investors Chronicles, Land Rover, Upper Deck, Liberty Mutual, and a few manufacturing and financial companies as well. I have and can do it all whether as a developer, team lead, architect, training instructor, business analyst or program manager. That’s what I love about the industry: being able to contribute at all levels.
When I am out of the office, I enjoy competitive tennis and plays on a 4.5 rated league team. I’m also learning to play golf with my daughter, and words that start with ‘q’ without ‘q-u’. My wife Alice is a high school teacher and I hope that together, we can play a role in bringing about an online curriculum with a collaborative, social platform that compliments the one in the classroom.
